Root of woody plants are difficult to investigate because they make up extensive networks into the soil. Recent methods, including stable isotopes, hydraulic traits, and DNA protocols combined with standard methods and irrigation and fertilization experiments, have provided insight into root dynamics and depths in the lowland tropical forests of the Barro Colorado Nature Monument.
