Smithsonian Abyssal Volcanic Glass Data File

dataset
posted on 2020-02-18, 19:59 authored by William G Melson, Timothy O'Hearn, Eugene Jarosewich
The Smithsonian Abyssal Volcanic Glass Data File contains over 10,000 natural glasses from the sea floor analyzed by electron microprobe in the Department of Mineral Sciences. Analytical procedures were developed in the early 1970s by Gene Jarosewich and William Melson. Tim O'Hearn began analyzing specimens in 1976 and refined these procedures. The sea floor glasses are from mid-ocean ridge spreading centers, fracture zones, seamounts, back-arc basins, and trenches from around the globe. The majority of the specimens for this collection were donated to the Petrology Collection and analyzed by the electron microprobe with the understanding that the analyses were given to the donor for their privileged use for a year, then merged into our database.

The dataset published here includes three files:

• smithsonian_abyssal_volcanic_glass_data_file.xlsx
• smithsonian_abyssal_volcanic_glass_data_file_chemistry.csv
• smithsonian_abyssal_volcanic_glass_data_file_references.csv

The XLSX file is the original file provided by the authors updated to use the XLSX file format. The CSV files are plain-text versions of each tab from the original workbook modified only to remove empty rows and strip whitespace from individual cells.
